Summer Vacation 2018: Hilton Head!

We had a great vacation down south! On Thursday, right after bike camp we took off driving, trying to get as close to North Carolina as we could. We made it all the way to Philadelphia and woke up (as we so often do...) in a Hampton Inn for our mandatory mustache photo.

Luckily, all that night driving on Thursday allowed us to make it to Wilmington, NC it time....

...to go out for a hipster night out, starting at a hipster bar. (Exhibit A: Donkey on car)

(Exhibit B: Taxidermy)

(Exhibit C: Old School Lawn Chairs)

After the bar, we had an awesome treat...dinner at Vivian Howard's new pizzeria Benny's Big Time. The good was SO GOOD. Maddy literally at an entire pizza all by herself. And Audrey and Carl showed off their Dr. Evil

On Saturday, we had Carl's traditional pancakes, played with Steven Paws.

(There were also some iPad-stealing shenanigans that involved an impressive amount of planning as well as a specially created diversion!)

After breakfast we revisited the tire swing Carl pushed them on last time we visited. That was significantly more work this time!

But the big excitement was seeing the turtles and the alligators. (There's one in the water between Audrey and Maddy's head! 😳)

We always wish we had more time with Carl, Brooke and Ellie but we also REALLY wanted to get to Hilton Head and check out our home for the next week. The kids wasted no time before they cannon-balled right into the pool!

Eventually they were convinced to come in for dinner!

On Sunday, our first full day, they waited SO patiently for their sunscreen to set.

(Audrey should know better than to start a water fight with Uncle Charlie.)

In the middle of the day on Sunday, Bob, mom and I decided to scope out the bike paths...

...we found a really pretty view of the marsh.

Then later on in the day, we took the kids out too.

The trike was awesome! Maddy had a great time cycling around the island! Audrey loved riding as well!

And then to the beach for an afternoon swim!

Late on Sunday, Katie, David and Levi arrived.

High fives all around!

Monday, we switched it up and went to the beach in the morning...

...pool in the afternoon. Such a tough life!

Monday evening, Bob, Maddy and I took another bike ride.

Tuesday morning, sunscreen faces!

On Tuesday, Bob and I took a bike ride where we bit off quite a bit more then we could chew. But the view we found was stunning!

Afternoon snack.

The epitome of summer vacation....Yoo-hoos by the pool!

On Wednesday, we dragged the kids around Savanna, Georgia...

...and watched them melt into puddles of misery. Holy humidity!

Thank goodness we got them back into the swimming pool before they suffered too terribly.

Uncle Charlie makes an excellent diving board.

We had perfect weather from start to finish. It was particularly nice the last afternoon we were there. The light was so beautiful.

They perfectly rationed their Yoo-hoos so they could have their last one, on the last night of vacation, during our high stakes game of Yahtzee.

On Saturday morning, we decided to walk to the beach one last time to see the sunrise before we started the long drive home.

Farewell Hilton Head, we'll miss you!
