Acquire, Day 19

I was really nervous about today, having been warned that there could be lots of tears and drama. However, I was really excited with how well it went. Reggi walked in and within ten minutes she and Maddy were playing with Legos WITH TWO HANDS. Amazing!

The rest of the day went pretty smoothly. Reggi gave Maddy step by step instructions for how to make decisions about which hand to use for which task. (i.e one hand opens the drawer, the other hand takes the book out.) This kind of decision making is totally new to Maddy since she's only ever had one hand at a time. I'd never fully understood how confusing it would be for Maddy to suddenly have to make these choices so I'm grateful that she's old enough to understand directions.

A big part of the day was spent learning how to dress.

I was really excited that Maddy was able to pull up her own socks...

...and to put on her own backpack.

After getting dressed, we went outside to see if she could use two hands to ride a tricycle.

And then they worked on some preschool-type activities like painting...

...and using scissors.

The most exciting thing is that Maddy is still willing to do all the right-handed tasks she's learned to do over the last few weeks even with the cast off, especially eating chocolate chips! I had no idea that chocolate was such a motivator for her but I'll use it! It was a great day.

Anytime I feel like something is too hard to do, I just watch her overcome a little more every day. She is my inspiration. I love you guys:-)
