And there was no doubt when we'd crossed the border as we were greeted with a moose.
We arrived in Bar Harbor with a few hours of daylight left so we decided to drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain. As gloomy as it was, it was still a better view than it was last time we came (fifteen or so years ago) in the middle of the worst rainy stretch in a hundred years! (or so we were told as a consolation for seeing nothing but fog from the top of the mountain!)
Our hotel was a quick bus ride from the downtown area of Bar Harbor, so we took it into downtown to find some dinner. Oh how we were already missing Flatbread Pizza! Because it was pouring rain, we ran into the first place we saw...and had some terrible Mexican food. But on the bright side, not finding the PERFECT place on the first night meant that we would actually branch out and not eat at the same restaurant three nights in a row!
On Thursday, our only plan was to take a carriage ride in Acadia to see some of the granite bridges that the Rockfellers built, so we had the morning free to enjoy the pool and the beautiful view! This pool has the same view as our balcony. My biggest regret is that we just didn't have enough time to sit and enjoy the view!
And then on to the carriage ride!
After the carriage ride, we went to Thunder Hole. I don't think we hit the tide quite right, it wasn't very "thunderous"! But it was still pretty!
Bob had asked our carriage driver where he could find the best lobster roll and she directed us to the Route 66 Diner. I'm not sure if it was THE best, but it was pretty close!
On our third day in Bar Harbor, we wanted to do some hiking and got a recommendation about a good hike that wasn't too strenuous, Flying Mountain.
The elevation is only 284 feet, but the view is still pretty stunning!
After the hike, we went to the Jordon Pond House to try the much-acclaimed Popovers. I had a vague memory of them from a previous trip and didn't find them to be memorable, so my expectations were low.
But the verdict was....DELICIOUS!
After the popovers, we wanted to take 'a little walk' around Jordan Pond. This walk was another in the long line of hikes Bob takes us on that we weren't prepared for, especially after already climbing Flying Mountain!
We TRIED to just go a little way, then turn back....but ended up walked too far on a glorified balance beam...and then decided it was better to keep going than turn back.
If only we'd known that the skinny boardwalk went on FOREVER. And then it took a boggy detour! By then end, we were racing to beat the sunset!
At least the sunset was pretty. (And Jordan Pond goes on the list along with the Blue Hills, Arethusa Falls and Mount Monadnock!)
Our last day in Bar Harbor and Audrey was determined to swim, despite the fact the temperature was in the sixties! (Note the discrepancy in attire between the swimmer and the spectators!)
For our last day we spent some time downtown in Bar Harbor and then took a ferry ride to Winter Harbor, and then a quick bus ride to Schoodic Point, another section of Acadia National Park.
Audrey got to drive the ferry on the way over.
Schoodic Point was beautiful, even on a a gloomy day.
On the ferry ride back, the sun even started to come out a bit.
It was a great vacation! It was so much fun to show the kids another National Park!
