The awesome thing about staying local is that we saved two days of driving. On Saturday morning, we slept in and then got in the car for (what felt like a super easy) three hour drive.
We checked into our hotel, the Fox Ridge Resort.
Since it was already pretty late, we just went into North Conway to find some dinner. Bob found a store that seemed to be made for him.
And then we discovered that our FAVORITE pizza chain (Flatbread Pizza Company) was right in downtown North Conway. Aside from some confusion about maple syrup flavored lemonade it was SO GOOD.
Sunday we didn't have any plans so we just took in some of the sights nearby:
Cathedral Ledge
And Echo Lake (which you can see from Cathedral Ledge)
Our resort had an inside pool (which was fine) but also an outside one which had limited hours but a beautiful view, so we promised the kids we'd head back so they could take advantage of the outside pool. Cannonball!
After swimming worked up our appetites, we were like, "Where should we have dinner....we can't go to Flatbead again, can we...?" But of course we can! It's vacation! Luckily, this time around Maddy figured out the maple syrup sweetened lemonade situation and proactively nipped that issue in the bud!
On Monday, I had reserved us a "exciting" three-mile river float on tubes down the Sacco river, one that was supposed to include some rapids.
Unfortunately, the river was so low that we had to be rerouted to another section of the river for a more "relaxing" float.
We got in at a REALLY shallow part....and we mistakenly thought it would get much deeper. It didn't.
(Audrey, lover of all creatures great and small made a friend)
It was less a "relaxing" float and more of a group problem solving exercise in traversing three-miles of very slow moving river without a paddle before the last shuttle bus returns to the parking lot. But that's why you have kids, right? To have them pull your float down a river....😉
The red covered bridge on the background was close to the end of our float and it looks to peaceful and relaxing in the photo. BUT that doesn't not accurately reflect the end of our trip! By the time we got there a storm had rolled in. Plus, there actually was a short section of rapids right at the end and because we made the rookie mistake of staying tethered we got hung up! And then to add another element of drama, an ambulance pulled up along the bank to help another floater who'd (we'd discovered later from our shuttle driver) injured himself. As the sky darkened and Maddy and I fought to get ourselves untangled from the slippery rocks Maddy looked so concerned when the ambulance pulled up and asked, "Is that here, FOR US?" 😂
After our long day on the river, we did NOT go to Flatbread Pizza for dinner, which was literally the worst thing that happened on our vacation.
On Tuesday we drove even further north for an hour and spent the day at Santa's Village. It was really fun! I didn't even mind all the Christmas music and decoration. The park was really well kept, and nice and shady!
And they even had REAL reindeer!
(I had to take this photo. Audrey always gets the "Hangriest" of all of us!)
(This isn't creepy, AT ALL)
It was a great day, and an awesome first half to our vacation. And for the record, we did go BACK to Flatbead on our last night in North Conway, which surprised exactly zero of us!
