Luckily, while we are on vacation kids' softball team beat the Rebels advancing the Wildcats to championship series, for the first time ever (for MY kids anyway!). So that meant that the majority of our last week of summer vacation was consumed by softball. To add another element of intrigue, the other team in the championship series was the Gators...Maddy's old team. All year, it was strange for me to watch Maddy play in the Wildcat green rather then the Gator blue!
So to recap the season, the Wildcats did awesome all year, expect against the Gators because the Gators had a pitcher (the name "Roma" is uttered with a combination of fear and admiration in my house!) who was SO good, no one could hit off of her. But aside from Roma, the two teams were pretty evenly matched. AND each pitcher is only allowed to pitch six innings in a play off series. So that meant the Wilcats' mission was to make sure that Roma had to use up all her innings as soon as possible, and get the series to the third (hopefully Roma-less) game. And the Wildcats did pretty awesome. They kept the first game close enough that Roma had to pitched four of her innings to get the win. (4-7 Gators)
And the second game (which was completely Roma-less, on the mound at least) the Wildcats blew the Gators away 20-9. Whoo hooo!
So it came down to a final game. This is a photo of Maddy batting against Roma (who had two innings left to pitch). This pitcher is pitching WAY faster than a twelve year old should be capable of pitching, but Maddy is ready to take a swing anyway. I could not be prouder of her. She's got way more courage than I have!
The game ended up going into extra innings and included a crazy moment where Audrey was on third and her coach told her to steal home (NOOOOOO!!! 😱) and that did not end well. The end result was a 10-11 win for the Gators. It was definitely disappointing to get so close to winning only to lose, but the kids had a great season and learned so much this year.
There's always next year!
