Camping (Finally!)

One week later than we planned, and at a different campground (Gifford Woods in Vermont, rather than our regular Russell Pond in New Hampshire) but we finally set off on our camping trip.

On Friday, we didn't have too much daylight....just enough to set up the tent and find the bathroom (in my opinion, the most important aspect of camping is proximity to the bathroom!)

Once darkness fell, the headlamps come out, mostly so that Maddy can scrutinize all the ridges in her potato chips.

On a whim, we decided to take a little walk to the pond to see the stars and it was AMAZING. It was such a clear night, the kids were blown away. And as an added bonus, we had inadvertently decided to stargaze the day before the peak of the Perseid Meteor shower. I must had seen five or six shooting stars!

Rise and shine Bob! You know there's no "sleeping in" in camping!

Overnight, a worm had descended next to the tent. I think Maddy's thinking, "Fascinating" while Audrey's thinking, "New pet!"

We knew the sunshine was going to go away quickly on Saturday, so we got out on Kent Pond as early as we could.

That tiny island in the middle of the pond was dubbed "Dog Poop Island" (for obvious reasons, thanks Walden 🙄!)

Maddy and Amaia took the first turn in the kayaks, with their adaptive pivots. They did awesome!

It was great to see them with so much independence!

And Andy took the smaller two out in the canoe.

Then they swapped, Audrey and Kai took a turn in the kayaks

Audrey is also a natural kayaker!

And Bob took canoe duty.

Bob even convinced me to take a turn around the lake and I have to admit, it's pretty fun. Very peaceful (maybe that was just by contrast with being on the shore with the dog and the kids!)

The kids had a great time exploring the campground as well.

Audrey was pretty much always at Walden's side...

...when she wasn't trying to wrangle other poor, unsuspecting wildlife.

Unfortunately, the rain only held out so long so we had to pack up in the rain Sunday morning. But we found a great breakfast place and consoled ourselves with hot chocolate with whipped cream!

It was a great weekend, one of our favorite summer tradition!
