Vacation Part Three: Hilton Head

On Saturday of our vacation week we had a pretty easy drive from Wilmington to Hilton Head, arriving right at dinner time. And the kids' reaction when they saw the house where we'd be staying in was….

…understated (to say the least.)

And they didn't waste anytime enjoying the pool.

I think Bob found his happy place in the pool as well.

(The inflatable turtle was practically family by the time we left.)

It wasn't all relaxation though. They both got in a fair amount of flight practice.

Audrey could go really far with a little help. And the resulting head injuries were really quite minor, considering her velocity.

We forgave Uncle Charlie though. Next time, I'll take him at his word when he tells me to "back up"!

And, who knew that Audrey was such a crack shot? Unfortunately, things did get a little ugly at times. But I'm sure Grandfather deserved whatever he got.

When we could tear ourselves from the pool, we'd head to the beach with our boogie boards.

Uncle Charlie was an excellent sand castle builder.

And we all enjoyed playing in the surf. It was so warm and the kids had a blast! Audrey preferred it a little calmer. I guess when you weigh 32 pounds, you versus the waves is not really a fair fight!

Maddy, on the other hand was a big fan of the "monster waves." We had to drag her out every so often to rest or else she would have totally exhausted herself!

On Wednesday, Bob and I had a day to ourselves to visit Savannah. We walked all over the city, took tons of photos and had an amazing lunch.

Then we drove out to Wormsloe Plantation to see the amazing live oaks. It felt like walking around in a fairy tale.

Or, as Bob called it a "spooky chigger forest". It did feel extraordinarily remote. And so very quiet.

So, most of our days were either pool-lunch-beach. Or beach-lunch-pool. That's just the kind of routine I like. Sometimes we took a break from the water to make some sidewalk art.

But even when breaking for lunch, the kids would rather not get too far from the pool.

But I guess all that time in the pool paid off, because by the middle of the week, Audrey could swim across the pool without her life jacket (as witnessed by Mr. Turtle!)

There was also this little "stress reliever" that I thoughtfully brought along for Bob. In hindsight, attempting a 1000 piece puzzle in less than a week wasn't my brightest idea. But the puzzle did make it home (unsolved, but also un-torched!)

On Thursday, Aunt Katie flew in from Chicago for a couple days.

We put her right to work building sand castles.

Unfortunately, the weather on our last day in South Carolina was pretty miserable. While Maddy doesn't mind hunkering down with a book and a blanket on a rainy day, her sister tends to get into mischief when she gets bored.

So, we took a little road trip to Harbor Town to see the lighthouse.

Lucky for us, Bob and I travel with our own photographer now so we don't have to do awkward selfies anymore!

By the time we got back from the lighthouse, the weather had cleared up enough for one last trip to the beach.

It was really hard to leave Hilton Head, we had such a great time. But we have tons of good memories to take home.

And the ride home wasn't too bad. (Swimmers ear and massive traffic aside... but that was a small price to pay.)

And there was this beautiful sunset in Pennsylvania (where we stopped at a dive-y pizza place for dinner and were pleasantly surprised that no one got food poisoning!)

It was a perfect vacation!
