Vacation Part One: Washington DC

We'd been looking forward to our summer vacation for so long (especially though that long winter!) that it was hard to believe it was finally time! Early Wednesday morning we piled in the car and headed south to Washington D.C.

We dropped our luggage off at our swanky hotel and started walking towards the White House. Surprisingly, the Obama's did not come out to greet us.

The walk to the White House really taxed those with the littlest legs, so (to preserve good will amongst the four-year-old set) we got a cab and drove over to the Lincoln Memorial.

The kids were pretty impressed, though slightly disappointed when Honest Abe didn't get up and walk around like he does in Night at the Museum, Part Two.

The view from the Lincoln Memorial was amazing.

And the National Mall was very impressive as well.

From there we walked over to the Vietnam Memorial.

And then we started walking towards the Washington Monument. Little legs started to complain, but when she saw the ducks she caught a second wind. (Plus also, I think the Washington Monument looks much closer than it is!)

After making it to the WW II Memorial (just short of the Washington Monument...we'll hit that next time...) we decided that the kids were done with sightseeing for the day so we grabbed a cab and found a restaurant in Chinatown near our hotel. The waitresses, noticing that Audrey was fascinated with the lobster tank, decided that she needed to hold one. Audrey thought she was getting a pet, but eventually she let them put her friend back in the tank.

On Thursday morning we enjoyed the lobby of the hotel for a few more minutes before tackling the Smithsonian Museums. (I told you our hotel was swanky!)

After another walk that taxed little legs, we arrived at the National Air and Space Museum.

By far, the highlight was standing next to Amelia Earhart's plane.

The second coolest thing we saw was the Wright Brother's Plane.

After the Air and Space Museum we started to head over to the Natural History Museum but got distracted by the most awesome fountain ever. It was such a great place to cool off.

When we eventually did arrive at the Natural History Museum (with only about 45 minutes of children's patience left in the tank) we were pleasantly surprised at how interested Audrey was in the animal bones, and how much she knew about different animals!

Here, Maddy does her best giraffe impersonation.

Finally, it was time to hit the road again and head further south. Little legs needed a little help getting back to the car, but I don't think Bob minded. We thought we were done sightseeing for the day but....

...our route took us right by the Jefferson Memorial and we decided to press our luck with the exhausted kids and check it out.

The were actually fine. Somehow they found more energy to act like the lunatics they normally are.

We had a great time in Washington D.C. and we'd love to come back in a few years!

Next stop, Wilmington North Carolina.
