This school year that started with the kids learning completely from home in mid-September last year, to a hybrid model (which was pretty awful, honestly) after the winter break to five days a week in person starting April 5. As nervous as we were to send the kids back to school with less distance between desks, it turns out that was the right decision. Everyone was SO much happier back at school full-time, and COVID didn't spread in school. So, though it was short, I'm glad the kids got a little bit of "normal" this year.
And then, right as the school year was ending, the vaccination rates in our state allowed a lot of COVID restrictions to go away more quickly than anyone expected, and all a sudden it felt possible to do some of the normal end of year activities. While Audrey's school didn't give her grade a full field day, they did plan an field trip to the park next to the school, and some slush.
Sadly, my graduation 8th grader did miss something she'd been looking forward to, the field trip to Washington DC with her school. They also weren't able to have the traditional 8th grade dance, but the PTO planned an outdoor block party which was probably more fun for her anyway.
As this crazy, terrible year is coming to an end I think it's finally hitting me how hard this has been and how grateful I am that our family has made it through to the other side, and that this summer looks so much brighter than last summer. Thank goodness for vaccines!
