Eleven

Happy Eleventh Birthday Maddy!

I know it’s such a cliche but ELEVEN! What the heck? This isn’t possible! You’ve changed so much in the last year! I find myself catching a glance at you and being shocked at how tall you are! There’s no doubt about it. You are a full-sized human now. And though I keep being warned that the teenager attitude is on its way, so far you’ve remained the same sweet, loving, enthusiastic kid we’ve always known.

And funny. So so funny. Your love of sweets is legendary (just ask your Girl Scout Troop leader) as is your love of piles of meat (just ask pretty much anyone.)

Now that you are a "tween" you have very specific ideas about what constitutes “good” music. I guess that’s to be expected. But, I’m pleased that you do have good taste ...at least according to the person who spent the last eleven years trying to curate your musical taste! 😉 Taking you to your first concert to see the Avett Brothers was one of the highlights of the summer. It's fun to introduce you to music I love, but it's even more fun to watch you figure out what you like.

And, speaking of music, you’re doing an awesome job learning to play the trumpet. We were so proud watching you at your concert last month. You all sounded great, but I have to say, the trumpet was the star of the show. And don’t think that we didn’t notice that you had the most difficult part to play!

Even though February is your birthday month, it’s March Madness that you can’t wait for. You are the biggest Cats fan I know. The other night after they lost to Tennessee you beat yourself up for forgetting to put on your lucky grey Cats shirt. I mean, it WAS totally your fault that they lost, but try not to take it too hard. And next time, PUT ON YOUR LUCKY SHIRT, ok?

This year, you made the leap from being a basketball spectator to actually playing on our town’s travel team. I won’t lie. Your dad and I were pretty nervous about this. Nervous that you’d get hurt, nervous that you wouldn’t be able to keep up with the other girls. Nervous that some crazy Winthrop sports parent would say something rude if you made a mistake.

But so far it’s been amazing, we're so glad we let you take a chance on a sport you've always loved. Your coaches and teammates are awesome and supportive. We got you a bad-ass pair of sports goggles and the rest of our worries have faded away (seriously, you look fierce!). And if I ever had any fears about the other parents, those fears went away the day you scored a basket and the Winthrop bleachers erupted in cheers. No one mentions your disability, but everyone knows how hard you work and your success is something that makes everyone who knows you proud. The most awesome thing about you is that when you put your mind to do something, you work as hard as it takes to make it happen. We're so proud of all you accomplished this year.

Happy Birthday Maddy! Keep on being awesome!
