We hit a lot of traffic and had to weather a chatty campground host (in the waning moments of daylight!) before we finally got our tent up and got to the good stuff....s'mores!
Good morning, Bob! Time to get moving.
While we puttered around, making breakfast Audrey drew up her memories of the trip so far. She made sure that she included herself making s'mores!
We decided to take a hike to nearby Arethusa Falls, but first we needed to fuel up!
This is first part of the trail when we happily and mistakenly thought we were halfway there. Shortly after this we saw a sign that alerted us the fact that we were NOWHERE CLOSE TO HALFWAY! Cue the very sad music.
We'd hoped to make it to the falls before lunch, but that was clearly not going to happen. But these rocks made an excellent lunch place.
Taking a break.
Almost there! You just have to make it through the creepy root pass.
And also another quarter mile, which must be some sort of special New Hampshire system of measure because it was unlike any 1/4 mile I've ever experienced. And then there were some really treacherous rocks. But finally, we made it!
Audrey's face when the realization dawned on her that we had to do that same long hike to get back to the car. But at least we had cookies.
Relaxing around the campfire, basking in the glow of Maddy's Kindle.
While we were expecting rain Saturday night, it's still never fun to think about packing up all that wet gear in the rain. And from inside the tent it sounded torrential, so we were motivated to get up early and leave. But by 8:30 we were cozily sitting in a diner, sipping hot cocoa. And they even had biscuits and gravy.
We had a really great time! The kids are already talking about next year's camping trip.
