Summer Vacation

We just got back from our trip to Kentucky and Norris Lake and it was a great trip!

We've been planning this trip for months and Maddy was so excited to finally use her "airplane bag". She really did wheel it all around the airport all by herself.

Maddy says, "Can you point me to the closest Cinnabon?"

It had been over a year since we'd flown anywhere and I was really impressed at what a great traveller Maddy has become. Give that girl some Biscoff Cookies and she'll sit through even the longest runway delay! Audrey was pretty cooperative too. Traveling with two little ones wasn't quite the nightmare that I'd been fearing.

The day we arrived in Kentucky, Great-Grandmother Johnson made Maddy her best friend by giving her TWO bowls of ice cream (and not even making her eat any strawberries.) Maddy also learned that biscuits taste better in Kentucky, especially when Great-Grandmother Johnson makes them.

The next day, we got up, jumped in the car, drove to Norris Lake, slapped a life vest on Audrey and threw her in the lake! She loved to float around, though she wasn't a fan of the life vest.

Maddy on the other hand did not mind the life vest at all. She would have slept in the water if we let her.

Another family milestone: first family photo in a lake.

Unfortunately, our second day at the lake wasn't too sunny. We woke up to lots of fog and it never really cleared up. So we mostly hung out on the boat and Audrey got acquainted with Uncle Patrick...

...and Uncle Charlie.

The rainy day was the perfect chance for Maddy to try fishing for the first time. Cody actually caught something and I was a little nervous about what Maddy was going to think when she realized what happens to fish that get caught. As Cody reeled it in, she yelled, "Hi Guy!" in the most chipper voice imaginable...but luckily he got away from Cody as he was taking it off the hook. I was happy to save that "circle of life" conversation another day!

This year, Maddy was A LOT braver than last year and she not only took Bob up on his offer to take a ride on the jet ski, she begged him to go really fast!

And her need for speed didn't stop with the jet ski. She decided that she needed to drive the boat as well. And Cousin Drew decided that it was a great idea to let a 4-year-old have complete control of a moving vehicle. Luckily for everyone it's a really big lake!

Finally on Sunday we had one more swim before we said goodbye to the houseboat.

On the boat back to shore the kids were pretty somber. Leaving the lake is never fun.

But then it was time for phase two of our trip where Audrey got to meet some more relatives in Louisville. She met Great-Grandma Fields...

...and Great-Aunt Paula (Great-Aunt Tina too but we forgot to snap a photo.)

Then Maddy ate her body weight in Great-Grandma Fields' green beans.

After lunch and a little kickball with Aunt Paula, it was time to go back to New Haven for dinner with Great-Grandmother Johnson.

And we were able to squeeze in a quick trip out to Bear Hollow before we took off for the airport.

It was a great trip! Maddy and Audrey say, "We miss the houseboat already!"
